Performance = potential – interference.
When it comes to our wellbeing and health, being aware of and dealing with interferences is increasingly critical – be it psychological or physiological. We can manage many of these with a clear mind and healthy body.
So, why do we need to stress well?
When we go into stress our body is moving out of the balanced state it likes to maintain, unless stress is needed to survive or adapt. This is good for us in the short term, when we use it to learn, develop and adapt.
It is not good for us when it persists beyond its initial physiological or psychological developments.
As stress persists it can present in different ways, including:
- lower cognitive function
- suboptimal decision making
- irrational behaviour
- maladaptive behavioural patterns
- poor sleep
Ultimately, if we stay out of balance for extended periods of time, the end result is chronic stress with very little respite.
This contributes to many of the modern health challenges we face today including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, lowered immune system, some auto-immune conditions, insomnia, reduced memory, burnout and overall poor mental health.

When we can adjust to the environment and apply skills to manage stress well, we can achieve the opposite of these suboptimal outcomes.
If we can understand how the body and mind work in times of stress,
and use techniques and tools to manage this, we will get more out of life.
We can stress well.
We can have the foundations for optimal performance in our life at home and our work.
We can embrace the process of a new age of conscious adaptation to modern life as we chase our goals.
